What is Arthritis?

Arthritis literally is an “inflammation of the joint”

There are many types of arthritis, but the most common type is Osteoarthritis, which is a progressive degeneration becoming more prevalent with age. Cartilage loss leads to “bone on bone” and pain, but much more is involved than cartilage changes. Until recently, no one thought that cartilage could grow again once it was damaged. We now know that is not true. Research at major U.S. Medical institutions like Stanford and the University of Pittsburgh has shown cartilage cells can be replaced and new information from this year’s Orthobiologic conference has shown promising long term results using Bone Marrow to treat knee arthritis.

“He is an exceptional physician and compassionate man. I trust his expertise and abilities and would highly recommend him to anyone who suffers from chronic pain.”
—Richard S.

Many patients with arthritis are left confused, in pain, and with limited activity.  They don’t want knee replacement knowing AARP published patient guidance suggests it leaves one out of three patients with chronic pain. Faced with this data, patients often do nothing. However, arthritis is progressive, so earlier treatment may be better.

New Effective Treatment Options instead of surgery

The use of Biologic treatments is one of the most well-known regenerative therapy options. The incredible healing potential of embryonic and mesenchymal cells can resolve pain and aid healing. Many patients have found pain relief with this approach. There are new, FDA regulations on the use of these products, and we will continue to work within that framework to provide patients with options.

Newer options include:

  • Amniotic fluid or Amniotic membrane matrix
  • Wharton’s jelly (containing stem cells)
  • Exosomes (messenger elements that direct healing)
  • PRP and PRF (platelet rich plasma, plasma with fibrin)
  • Bone Marrow

Hyaluronic Acid can help and protect the joint

Most patients have done the typical arthritis knee pain treatments including rest, bracing, non-steroidals and physical therapy. Sometimes even topical medications may help. But fortunately for patients, Medicare now covers hyaluronic acid supplements to relieve knee pain.

Hyaluronic acid is a lubricant found in healthy knee joints. We lose this over time with the development of arthritis. Doctors used to get this product from animals, leading to a number of allergic reactions, but now coporations have ways to produce it that avoids those issues. The treatment takes literally 5 minutes and involves very little discomfort and recent studies show these lubricants can delay or prevent knee replacement surgery! These injections can be combined with PRP for more relief!

If you have not tried these options, or if you have failed older, less effective products, come to us and let us decide if you might benefit from newer products.

Knee arthritis patients who fail treatments and need surgery

Some patients fail all of the conservative treatment options and are left facing surgery. There are things you should know about knee surgery in patients with significant arthritis:

Arthroscopic knee surgery in arthritis patients is ineffective

Mensical repairs or excision in patients with arthritis most often does not lead to pain relief

Unfortunately, the only surgery in significant knee arthritis is usually Total Knee Replacement…a surgery where the end of the femur bone and the top of the tibia bone are cut off, and a surgery that AARP says leads to chronic pain in 1/3 of patients! However Orthopedic researcher Phillipe Hernigou has shown biologic therapy can help as well as surgery.

Cell therapy can help relieve your pain! French Orthopedic surgeon Phillipe Hernigout has shown Cell therapy to be effective treating knee arthritis.

The healing potential of regenerative medicine is incredible and many patients have found incredible results. However, these results have a much better chance of working if done before the joint injury is too severe… so don’t wait too long to seek treatment!

Cell Therapy

The understanding of the causes of knee pain is changing. We now are beginning to recognize why some patients hurt, and others do not, and as we direct our treatments towards those causes we are finding new ways to relieve pain. Cell therapy may help you find pain relief without surgery.

“We’re at the beginning of a paradigm change in medicine with the promise of being able to facilitate regeneration of parts of the human body, …… adult stem cells can generate replacements for cells that are lost to injury or disease. The ability to facilitate the regeneration of parts of the human body is no longer the stuff of science fiction, the cell based therapies and their use in regenerative medicine is one of the most promising fields of science already producing improbable advances.”
—Dr. Scott Gottlieb, FDA Commissioner

We know you hurt!  We sympathize and want to help. There is substantial research to show that biologic treatments have incredible potential! Read our blog post entitled “would you try stem cell?” and learn about the results of a study on knee arthritis in France, in which patients who had both cell therapy and surgery, chose stem cell treatments 2 to 1 over knee replacement surgery! If you have been told Orthobiologics will not work for you then consider reading this blog post.

Though all treatments have the potential for complications or failure, Biologic therapy is proving to be a good option for treating arthritis pain and disability. Many patients have had these treatments and found improvement with No Hospital, No surgery, No Anesthesia.

Don’t continue to live with pain and disability caused by arthritis. Schedule a consultation today or sign up for our mailing list today!
